The Plot (from Goodreads):

When Hazel Sharp, daughter of Mirror Lake’s longtime local detective, unexpectedly inherits her childhood home, she’s warily drawn back to the town—and people—she left behind almost a decade earlier. But Hazel’s not the only relic of the past to a drought has descended on the region, and as the water level in the lake drops, long-hidden secrets begin to emerge…including evidence that may help finally explain the mystery of her mother’s disappearance.

The Reveal:

Holt had killed his first wife, Audrey. She was leaving him, so he took away her keys to stop her. She decided to leave on a bike. He went after her in her car (with the boys in the back seat) and hit her accidentally and killed her. Rob and Pete helped him hide the car and cover up the death.

Jamie had accidentally killed someone. She was waiting in the woods for Hazel and a teen snuck up on her. She was jumpy and accidentally killed him, and then ran away.

Gage was the one who copied Hazel’s mom’s note. He thought he was protecting his father. Later, Holt found the original and thought Gage had killed Hazel’s mother.

Rob, Hazel’s uncle, was the bad guy. He was a drug addict and a dealer, and Holt was going to arrest him for it. Rob found out that Holt accidentally killed Audrey and was blackmailing him. He was also skimming money from his own company and blamed Hazel’s mom. He had killed her too.

Caden showed up in time to save Hazel from Rob. He got shot, she ran. Rob got away but Caden was okay.

The Ending:

In the epilogue, they found Hazel’s mother under Rob’s gazebo. Hazel shared the house with her brothers and let Caden’s family live there for the time being.

The Review:

This book has the most perfect cover, and this eerie image sets the scene impeccably for Daughter of Mine. I’m a big fan of Megan Miranda and am always excited to read her latest release.

While the atmosphere of Daughter of Mine couldn’t be beat, the storyline took its time. I enjoyed unwrapping the secrets of the residents of Mirror Lake, a town that certainly has a lot to hide.

This was a perfectly serviceable thriller, but lacked the “wow” factor that I’ve come to love in many of her previous books. I can’t even pinpoint what I didn’t love about it, but I found the reveals to be predictable and the plot to be too formulaic. I enjoyed Daughter of Mine while I was listening to it, but I doubt this is one that will stick with me long-term.

I enjoyed Ines del Castillo’s narration. I’m not sure I’ve listened to a production by her before, but I enjoyed her performance and would certainly listen to another audiobook by her. One thing that stuck out to me was how distinctly she annunciates certain words!
