The Plot (from Goodreads):

Nikki Griffin, a private-investigator when she isn’t running her small bookstore, is on a case. The matriarch of one of the wealthiest San Francisco families has been defrauded by a con-man, and her furious son enlists Nikki to find the money. And find the con-man.

Nikki isn’t a fan of men who hurt women. Her secret mission, born of revenge and trauma, is to do everything she can to remove women from dangerous situations—and to punish the men responsible.

As Nikki follows the trail toward the con-man, she realizes that no one involved is telling her the whole truth. When the case overlaps with her attempt to protect a woman in trouble, and Nikki’s own life is put in danger, Nikki has to make terrible choices about who to save—and how to keep herself alive.

The Review:

Many thanks to Booksparks for gifting me this book as a part of my #springbookscope, and to Macmillan Audio for the advanced listener’s copy.

Who wouldn’t want to read a book about a bookstore owner slash private investigator?? This series looked amazing just from the description. One of my biggest pet peeves is starting in the middle of a series, whether they can be read as standalones or not, so I picked up the audio of Save Me From Dangerous Men before reading One Got Away.

I’m a huge fan of Nikki. She’s a badass who has made it her life’s work to defend abused women, and I love that premise. Her backstory is interesting and does an excellent job of explaining why she is the way she is.

The highlight of this second book was Mason, a precocious 11-year-old who befriends Nikki and wants to help with her investigation. Nikki was so kind to him, and he ended up making the perfect sidekick!

The audio of this book was perfect. As usual, I loved having the option to switch between the physical book and the audio. I listened to most of this book while folding laundry, and it was the perfect thing to occupy my mind! I loved the narrator, and the audio was very clear so I was able to speed it up.

QOTD: What’s something that will make you pick up a book no matter what? I’m a sucker for bookstores as the location, as well as pet dogs.
